The year of 2018 was marked by harsh criticism on how the Government was dealing with the Brazilian PTO’s backlog problem. 2019 starts with a new president – Jair Bolsonaro. Aligned with the campaign promises, the Brazilian PTO no longer reports to the Ministry of Industry, Foreign Trade and Services, but to the newly created, particularly powerful, Ministry of Economy (which now includes Planning and Foreign Trade).
The PTO is under the Special Secretariat for Productivity, Employment and Competitiveness, led by Carlos Alexandre da Costa, a former member of the transition team of the new president, who appointed the economist Cláudio Vilar Furtado as the new PTO’s president.

In view of this scenario, our webinar will discuss how 2018 ended, especially regarding the Brazilian backlog and what to expect for 2019-2020.

• The backlog in 2018
• Brazilian political changes and its effects for 2019-2020

After 20 years of contending, leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador finally won the Mexican Presidential Election of 2018 and took office on December 1st. Days later, a new head of the Mexican Patent and Trademark Office (IMPI), Juan Lozano, was appointed. Among Lozano’s projects, a “democratization” of the IP System has been proposed, in order to facilitate access to everyone to IP Protection, including a full implementation of an online filing, prosecution and enforcement system.

Also, Lozano is seeking an Administrative Simplification project, aiming to reduce the necessary steps to obtain registrations.
