Brazil: closer to the Madrid System

  • 30 May 2019
  • New legislation

Brazil has taken an important step forward in the process to join the International Trademark System, which allows the registration and extension of international trademarks in this country. On the 22nd of May, the Federal Senate approved by Decree the adhesion to the Madrid Protocol, which had already been approved in April by the lower House. Said Decree is estimated to be effective in October 2019, once it has been ratified by the President.

With the adhesion of Brazil to the System, international trademark holders may extend the protection of their distinctive signs to the greater market of Latin America and one of the greatest innovation centers. It is a good time to review the trademark strategy in the area and study the protection possibilities opened up in this new scenario, for which we recommend expert advice.

In Clarke, Modet & Cº Brazil, we can provide you with more information about how to take the best advantage of your international trademark. Do not hesitate to contact us with any query.
