The Chilean Association of Biotechnological Companies (Asociación Chilena de Empresas de Biotecnología, ASEMBIO A.G.) encouraged that BIOLATM 2015, the largest Ibero-American Biotechnological fair and one of the most renowned worldwide, be held for the first time in Chile, on November 16 and 17, at the CentroParque conference center in Santiago.
The purpose of the event is to develop mutual benefits between Latin American and European companies and entities, opening potential markets, investments and technological collaborations.
The event is co-hosted by Asembio and the Spanish Association of Biocompanies (Asociación Española de Bioempresas, ASEBIO), and is supported by Imagen de Chile, ProChile and its sector-specific brand Chilebiotech, cluster of the biotechnological companies in the country.
The company EBD Group, main partnering provider of the sector is also participating, with the collaboration of the Foreign Trade Institute (Instituto de Comercio Exterior, ICEX) and Spain’s Center for Technological and Industrial Development (Centro para el Desarrollo Tecnológico e Industrial de España, CDTI).
When addressing BIOLATAM 2015, Arturo Covarrubias, Asembio’s chairman, stated that “Chile is betting for biotechnology, supported by an excellent regulatory framework and good economic incentives”. He adds that the purpose of the fair is to satisfy the commercial and informative demands by the sectors, providing the necessary tools for its comprehensive development.
On the other hand, Imagen de Chile’s Executive Director, Myriam Gómez, highlighted the performance of this fair, stating that the “advancement of science and technology is a synonym of development and contributes to our validation before the international community, strengthening our country image. BIOLATM is one of the most relevant biotechnology events worldwide and to host it helps to position ourselves as a country that advances in innovation matters”.
High attendance
BIOLATAM 2015 summons the main companies and institutions in the Ibero-American biotechnological field, coming from the pharmaceutical, food, cosmetics, veterinarian, chemical and energy sectors, among others. In its two days of activities the fair encourages the development of science and technology through conferences, one-on-one meetings, partnering forums and a commercial fair.
The event also summons international academics, investigators and investors and, therefore, represents a instance of paramount importance to strengthen the link between biotechnology and business, from Chile to the world.
BIOLATAM was launched in 2013 in Colombia and had excellent results: 710 representatives from 29 countries, along with 500 delegates from 298 companies which took part in the partnering were in attendance; 839 one-on-one meetings took place; and 17 international investment funds were present, with a trade zone comprised by 23 speakers.
