The new law on food labeling, the regulation of which was published in the Official Gazette in late July (and which will come into effect in 2016) has generated concerns in several of Chile’s commercial partners. In the last revision of the WTO’s commercial policies, in May of this year, Canada, the US and Mexico submitted complaints before the Technical Barriers to Trade Committee of said organization regarding the new reform, which places Chile between the strictest countries in these matters.
These submissions are in addition to the questions submitted by 12 other countries and the objections expressed by more than 30 nations ever since the beginning of the regulation’s drafting process in January of 2013, undergoing various changes up to its recent enactment.
